The research article explores several aspects of peace as depicted in Leo Tolstoy’s celebrated novel War and Peace. Itopens with an abstract that has an overview of its aims and findings. The introduction part sets the context for exploring peace, linking it to contemporary issues and literary traditions. The rationale and objective sections articulate the significance of this paper for empathetic peace through a literary lens. The literature review identifies gaps in existing scholarship on Tolstoy and peace. The methodology section outlines the research design and qualitative analyses of text from the novelWar and Peace. A main section of the paper, the discussion, does thematic analyses, adding citations from primary sources to substantiate claimsthat reflect the complexity of peace in Tolstoy’s narrative in the novel. This examines how Tolstoy navigates the ground of war, not merely as a backdrop for heroic adventures, but as a means to cross-examine the very essence of peace, both as a social phenomenon and as an individual pursuit. Employing a literary-critical approach, the paper interrogates significant texts from the novel to uncover Tolstoy’s philosophical stance on peace, reconciliation, and the human condition. Through close reading and thematic analysis, this study reveals that War and Peace, while rooted in the historical events of the Napoleonic Wars, ultimately constructs a subtle vision of peace that outdoes binaries of war and tranquillity. The findings summarise the insights drawn from these analyses, emphasising the relevance of peace discourses in both historical and modern contexts. The conclusion encapsulates the research’s contributions to literary studies and peace discourse, suggesting avenues for future research. Finally, references are provided, listing all works cited in the paper. This structured approach not only reinforces the significance of Tolstoy’s work but also situates it within broader literary traditions concerning peace.
