It is universally truth that learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) commonly encounter a range of challenges in developing speaking proficiency, which is a natural aspect of second language acquisition all over the world. This study investigates the specific difficulties faced by Maithili-speaking ESL learners in enhancing their English speaking skills in the Mithilanchal region. Data were collected through classroom observations and direct interactions with college students in Madhubani. The findings reveal that learners experience multiple barriers, including psychological factors (such as anxiety and lack of confidence), physiological constraints, institutional limitations, and environmental influences. These challenges collectively hinder the effective development of oral communication skills. The study highlights the need for targeted pedagogical strategies and supportive learning environments to address these issues. It concludes by offering practical recommendations aimed at reducing these obstacles and facilitating improved speaking competence among ESL learners in this regional context.
